Tonight we are making a pot of pasta with canned tomatoes and canned beans, and it is a good deal better than that sentence sounds.
Here is the whole thing in one paragraph. Put a big pot of water on and salt it until it tastes like the sea. While it heats, cook a chopped onion and a few cloves of garlic slowly in oil in a second pan, seven or eight minutes, until they go soft and sweet. Add a can of chopped tomatoes, a good pinch of salt, and whatever dried herb is in the house. Let that bubble gently. Drain a can of beans, any beans, and tip them in. Cook the pasta, keep a mug of the water, and stir the pasta and a splash of that water into the sauce so it clings. Cheese on top if there is cheese. It feeds four, it costs less than most people spend on a coffee, and it is genuinely good, because of the onion and the salt and nothing else.
Now, the reason I am writing is not the pasta.
It is the box in the trunk of your car.
Somebody handed it to you two days ago. You said thank you, and you meant it, and you drove home, and then you parked and you did not carry it in. It is still out there. You have been out to the car twice since and left it where it was. And every time you open that trunk you feel something land on you that has nothing to do with groceries.

There is a whole system in the law for this
I want to show you something, because there is a line here, and God drew it in a completely different place from where most people think it is.
And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. (Ruth 2:2, King James Version)
Gleaning was not charity in the way we mean it. It was law. God wrote into the harvest instructions that the corners of every field stay uncut and the dropped grain stays on the ground, and He wrote it so that the person who needed it could come and take it without asking anybody's permission.
Read that again. He built the receiving into the system. He did not make it a favor somebody grants you on a bad week. He made it a right, and He made it public, and Ruth walked out into a field in daylight and did it in front of the whole town.
You are standing exactly where God built a door, and He has never once put shame in the doorway He made Himself. Ruth 2:2 has a woman walk into a field to gather what was left on purpose for her, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a person sitting in a car in their own driveway.
You have not stepped outside of anything, and there is no line here that you have crossed. It is written that the corners of the field were left standing by command, and the same Spirit who moved somebody to write that down is with you in that driveway tonight.
What is actually in the trunk
Let me tell you what I think is really out there, because it is not food.
It is the moment of becoming a person who needed something. That is the thing standing out in the driveway refusing to come through a door. Carrying the box through the front door would make it a fact in your own house, in front of your own people, and out in the trunk it is still sort of theoretical.
I understand that completely and I am not going to talk you out of the feeling. But I want to name one thing about it that I think is true.
You were not diminished on the day that box was handed over, and the direction of a kindness has never once changed a person's worth. The same Spirit who breathed Ruth 2:2 is in that driveway, and the written word there has a woman gather what was deliberately left standing and calls the whole arrangement grace.
The shame is not about the food. It is about the direction. A whole life has gone into being the one who carries things toward other people, and this week the direction reversed, and a person can hold a great deal of hardship as long as the direction stays the same.
A box from a pantry is not a verdict on the person who accepted it. It is a harvest corner that somebody left standing, exactly the way it was meant to be left.
You have been the one giving for a very long time, and God has never once said that a season of receiving cancels that out. The written word gives Ruth a field, a name and a place to stand, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a hard week from rewriting a person's whole history.
You are not a different person than you were on Friday, and heaven has not adjusted anything about how it sees you. Ruth 2 has a foreign widow gleaning in daylight and ending up in the line of the Messiah, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence like that land in a driveway.
What Boaz actually did
Now, there is a part of that chapter that people skip, and I think it matters to you tonight.
Boaz sees Ruth in his field. And rather than helping her, he tells his workers to deliberately drop extra grain and to leave it, and to say nothing about it.
He made the receiving easy and he made it invisible. He arranged it so she would not have to feel it. He understood the exact thing that happens in a driveway, three thousand years before this week, and he built around it.
That tells you something about how heaven runs a food box. The people who packed yours were not counting your dignity as the price of it. It was left standing in the corner of the field for whoever needed it, and this week that is you, and next year it may be somebody who is standing where you are standing and you will be the one who packed it.
You are being handled the way Boaz handled Ruth, deliberately and with care, and there was never a bill attached to any of it. The passage has a man arrange a harvest so a widow could take what she needed without being watched, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person believe that about their own week.
So this is what I believe is going out over somebody sitting in a car tonight.
You are not diminished by that box, and being on the receiving end of something has never once been a report on the size of a person. I am not being kind for the sake of it. Ruth 2:2 has a woman in a field taking what was deliberately left for her, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling that lifts a line like that off the page and puts it inside a man in a driveway.
And then this, which is the actual word.
You have a box of good food and a pot on the stove, and that is a dinner tonight for people you love. The written word says the corners were left standing by command, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary pot of pasta into a table that a family gets up from full.
Nobody inside that house is going to ask where the cans came from. That is a conversation you have been having on your own, in a driveway, and you can end it now.
Declare this over yourself
- Box sitting out in the trunk of my car, you are not a statement about the man who accepted you. Ruth 2:2 has a woman gather what was left standing on purpose, so by the Holy Spirit I carry you inside my own house, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of what this makes me in my own kitchen, you have no standing at my front door. The written word makes the corner of the field a command and not a favor, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading a box of food as a sentence about me.
- Father, You wrote the receiving into the harvest Yourself. Your word says the gleaner may come and gather, so by Your Spirit I open that box on my counter tonight and I cook what is in it.
