The Smaller TableHebrews 13:8

The Number Changes Every Week

This message is for the reader whose table is a different size on different weeks, who never knows how many she is cooking for until they are through the door, and who is tired of planning for a number that will not stay still

Tonight we are making a sheet pan of sausage and vegetables, and the reason it is a sheet pan is that a sheet pan does not care how many people are coming.

Here is the whole method in one paragraph. Heat the oven to 425. Cut whatever firm vegetables are in the house into chunks, potatoes and onions and peppers and carrots all work, and spread them on a large sheet pan with plenty of oil, salt and any dried herb. Cut sausages into thick pieces and scatter them over the top, or leave them whole if you would rather. Put the pan in for thirty minutes, then take it out, turn everything over with a spatula, and give it fifteen more so the edges go dark and sweet. Make sure the sausage is cooked all the way through with no pink in the middle. Squeeze lemon or splash vinegar over the whole pan while it is hot. It feeds four, or three, or six if you add another handful of potatoes at the start, and it costs a few dollars.

Now, the reason I am writing is not the sausages.

It is that you never know the number.

Some weeks there are five of you. Some weeks there are two. Somebody works late, somebody stays somewhere else, somebody arrives with a friend, somebody is here Wednesday and not Thursday and you find out at half past five.

And you keep planning, because that is your job, and every plan is built on a number that will not hold still, and the planning is exhausting in a way that nobody around you seems to notice. It is not the cooking. It is the twelve small recalculations a week.

The Number Changes Every Week

The one thing in the week that does not move

There is a sentence in Hebrews that is short enough to memorize and does more work than most long ones.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8, King James Version)

Read where that sentence sits in the chapter. It comes in the middle of practical instructions about hospitality, about strangers at the door, about people in prison, about contentment with what is already in hand. It is not a doctrinal aside. It is placed among ordinary domestic arrangements, on purpose.

And that is exactly where it is useful. In a week where the number changes on Tuesday and again on Thursday, the writer sets one fixed thing down in the middle of the household instructions and names it.

You have one thing in this week that does not move, and God has never once required a household to be predictable before He would be steady in it. Hebrews 13:8 puts an unchanging Christ in the middle of practical instructions about a home, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a kitchen at half past five.

You are not adrift, and heaven has never once needed a fixed number to be faithful to a family. It is written that He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room where the pan is in the oven.

The tiredness is in the arithmetic, not the cooking

Now let me name what is actually costing you, because I think it has been misfiled as being busy.

Cooking for five takes about the same effort as cooking for two. That is not where the tiredness comes from. It comes from the fact that you cannot ever finish a decision. Every plan you make is provisional, and provisional decisions do not close. They sit open in the mind and get revisited, and a dozen open decisions is far heavier than one closed one, however big.

That is why a light week can still leave a person wrung out by Friday. The cooking has not been too much. The deciding has been too often.

A week that will not settle is not a verdict on how organized somebody is. It is a set of moving parts that belong to other people, and no amount of planning on your end makes them hold still.

You are not disorganized, and God has never once graded a person on a number that other people keep changing. The passage sets an unchanging thing right in the middle of household instructions rather than in a theology chapter, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that the fixed point in a moving week.

You have been recalculating twelve times a week and calling it normal. Hebrews 13 is written to people whose circumstances were genuinely unstable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives them one immovable thing rather than a better schedule.

Cook something that does not need the number

Here is the practical part, and it is a change of dish rather than a change of you.

Stop planning meals that require the number, and start keeping two or three dishes that scale without any recalculation. A sheet pan is the best of them. More people, another handful of potatoes and another sausage. Fewer people, less of both, and the leftovers are just as good cold in a lunch tomorrow.

There is no arithmetic in a sheet pan. You put on what looks right for the people who came, and if somebody extra walks in at ten to six, you throw another handful on and add ten minutes.

That is not a lowering of standards. It is choosing a dish whose shape matches your actual life instead of one that punishes you for it.

You are allowed to cook the shape of your own week, and God has never once handed a person a life and then asked them to run somebody else's kitchen. Hebrews 13:8 sits among instructions about welcoming whoever turns up, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a pan that stretches into an ordinary act of peace.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is being said over somebody at half past five tonight.

You are not failing to run this house well, and a number that keeps moving has never once been a report on the person trying to plan around it. I am not being warm for the sake of it. Hebrews 13:8 sets an unchanging Christ down in the middle of domestic instructions, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling that lifts a line like that off a page and sets it down in a kitchen.

And then this, which is the actual word.

You have a sheet pan, some potatoes and a package of sausages, and that is a full table for however many walk through that door. The written word says the same yesterday, today and forever, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary sheet pan into a table where nobody is short and nobody is counted.

Nobody coming in tonight knows how many times you have recalculated. They will smell the pan and pull up a chair, and that is the whole event.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Number that changes every single week, you are not the thing this table stands on. Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever, so by the Holy Spirit you stop being the axis of my evenings, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Tiredness from deciding twelve times a day, you have no claim on my Friday. The written word sets one unchanging thing in the middle of ordinary household instructions, and by the Spirit of God I refuse to read a moving week as a failure to organize.
  3. Father, You are the same today as You were yesterday and nothing in this week has moved You. Your word says so in the middle of a chapter about welcoming people, so by Your Spirit I put the pan in tonight and I feed whoever walks in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
