The Same Breakfast for Fifteen Years

This message is for the reader who has eaten the identical breakfast for fifteen years, was told by somebody that it sounded sad, and has been quietly ashamed of a small daily comfort ever since

Tomorrow morning we are making the same breakfast, and we are adding one small thing to it, and we are not changing it.

Here is the whole method in one paragraph. Put half a cup of rolled oats and a cup of water or milk into a small pot with a real pinch of salt, and the salt is the difference between food and paste. Bring it to a bubble, turn it down low, and stir it now and then for five minutes until it thickens and goes creamy. While it cooks, put a small handful of any seeds or nuts in a dry pan over medium heat and shake them for two minutes until they smell toasted, which is the one addition here and it takes no extra time. Take the oats off the heat, stir in a small piece of butter, and put a spoon of jam on top without stirring it in. Seeds over the whole thing. It costs about twenty cents, it takes seven minutes, and it will hold a person up until lunch.

Now, the reason I am writing is not the oats.

It is a sentence somebody said to you at some point, in passing, and probably meant nothing by.

You mentioned that you have the same breakfast every day. Fifteen years of it. And they laughed, not unkindly, and said something like: that is a bit sad.

And you laughed too. And you have thought about it since.

And now, on a perfectly good morning, standing over a pot of oats you genuinely like, there is a small unpleasant sentence running underneath, and it has been running for a while, and it is about a bowl of porridge.

The Same Breakfast for Fifteen Years

The prayer that asks for one day at a time

There is a line in the prayer Jesus taught that is easy to read past because everybody knows it.

Give us this day our daily bread. (Matthew 6:11, King James Version)

Daily. It is the word that has caused translators the most trouble in the whole prayer, and whatever else it means, it clearly does not mean varied.

He teaches people to ask for the same thing every day. Not more, not different, not better. Bread, today, again.

And that is not a small concession to human limitation. It is the pattern of the whole thing: manna every morning, mercies new every morning, this day our daily bread. Scripture is unembarrassed by repetition in a way that modern life is not, and the repetition is presented as provision rather than as poverty.

You are keeping a pattern God Himself taught people to ask for, and He has never once called a daily thing sad. Matthew 6:11 has Jesus put the same request in people's mouths every single day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a kitchen at seven in the morning.

You have not been living small, and heaven has never once measured a life by how much it varied. It is written that we are to ask for daily bread, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room where the oats are thickening.

What the sentence got wrong

Now let me look at what that person actually said, because they were making a category error and it is worth naming.

They heard fifteen years of the same breakfast and pictured a life with nothing in it. Repetition as evidence of emptiness.

But that is backward. A person eats about a thousand meals a year, and nobody has a thousand interesting decisions in them. So a settled breakfast is not a symptom of a small life, it is what people with full lives do, because it removes one decision from every single morning and frees the attention for things that are actually load bearing.

You are not living a narrow life, and God has never once read a settled routine as evidence of an empty one. Scripture puts it plainly in Matthew 6:11, and the Holy Spirit carries it further than a page can: the same request taught for every day, with no embarrassment attached to the repeating.

You solved a problem fifteen years ago and it has been quietly working ever since. That is not sad. That is competence that nobody claps for.

A repeated breakfast is not a verdict on the life around it.

You are not living a narrow life, and God has never once read a settled routine as evidence of an empty one. The passage puts the same request in a person's mouth every day and calls it provision, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a stranger's category error off somebody's morning.

You have been quietly efficient for fifteen years and somebody mistook that for poverty. Matthew 6 is a chapter about not performing a life for other people to look at, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to a breakfast.

Add without changing

Here is the practical part, and there is a distinction in it that matters.

Do not change your breakfast. It works. Changing it in response to a passing remark would hand that remark authority it has not earned, and in three weeks you would be back to the oats anyway, feeling slightly foolish.

Add one small good thing instead.

Toast a handful of seeds in a dry pan while the oats cook. Two minutes, no extra pan to wash, no decision required tomorrow because it becomes part of the routine within a week.

And the reason to do it is not to make the breakfast more interesting for anybody's benefit. It is that toasted seeds are genuinely good and take no time, and a small good thing added to a settled pattern is how a routine gets better without becoming a project.

You are allowed to keep the thing that works, and God has never once required a person to justify a settled good. Matthew 6:11 asks for the same bread daily without apology, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes two minutes of toasted seeds into an improvement rather than a correction.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is being said over somebody at a stove in the morning.

You are not living a sad life, and fifteen years of the same breakfast has never once been a report on the person eating it. I am not being warm for the sake of it. Matthew 6:11 has Jesus teach people to ask for the same bread every day and attaches no embarrassment to it anywhere, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling that lifts a line like that off a page and sets it down over a pot of oats.

And then this, which is the actual word.

You have half a cup of oats, a pinch of salt and a spoon of jam, and that is a genuinely good breakfast that has held you up for fifteen years. The written word says give us this day our daily bread, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary bowl into a thing worth keeping rather than a thing to explain.

Nobody is watching what you eat in the morning. One person said one sentence once, and it has had quite enough of your attention.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence somebody said about my breakfast, you have had quite long enough in my kitchen. Matthew 6:11 says give us this day our daily bread, so by the Holy Spirit you leave this morning, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame about a small daily comfort, you have no standing over this pot. The written word teaches a person to ask for the same thing every single day and attaches no embarrassment to it, and by the Spirit of God I refuse to read a settled routine as a narrow life.
  3. Father, You taught people to ask for bread daily and You never once apologized for the repetition. Your word says this day our daily bread, so by Your Spirit I keep the same bowl in the morning and I toast the seeds while it cooks.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
