Nobody CameColossians 3:13

They Ate Somewhere Else and Did Not Say

This message is for the reader who cooked for teenagers who had already eaten at somebody else's house and did not think to mention it, and who is trying not to make a small thoughtlessness into a verdict on herself

Tonight we are making a tuna noodle bake, and I am not going to apologize for a single thing in it.

Here is the whole method in one paragraph. Heat the oven to 375. Boil eight ounces of any short pasta two minutes short of done and drain it. In the same pot, melt three spoons of butter, stir in three spoons of flour and cook it for a minute, then whisk in two and a half cups of milk slowly until it thickens into a sauce. Off the heat, stir in a big handful of grated cheese, a can of drained tuna, a handful of frozen peas straight from the bag, and plenty of salt and pepper. Fold the pasta through. Tip it into a dish, scatter crushed crackers or breadcrumbs and more cheese on top, and bake for twenty five minutes until it is bubbling at the edges and hot all the way through in the middle. It feeds five, it costs a few dollars, and the crunchy top is the whole reason anybody likes it.

Now, the reason I am writing is not the tuna.

It is that they had already eaten.

You cooked. Properly, at the right time, for the number of people who live in the house. And they came in around seven and one of them said, entirely without malice, that they had eaten at somebody's house, and the other one said the same, and they were not being rude and they were not making a point.

They just did not think to send a message. And that is completely true and completely understandable and you know it perfectly well.

And by the time the plates were being put away, that small thing had grown into something much larger in your chest, and you have been carrying the larger version around ever since.

They Ate Somewhere Else and Did Not Say

The instruction with an allowance built into it

There is a line in Colossians that most people quote at the end and skip at the front, and the front is where the mercy is.

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. (Colossians 3:13, King James Version)

Forbearing. The word means to put up with, to carry, to bear with. And the reason that instruction exists is that Paul assumes people who love each other are going to be irritating to each other regularly, in small ways, on ordinary days.

He does not write forbearance instructions for enormous offenses. Enormous offenses need something bigger than forbearance. This is a word for the tenth small thing in a week, and its presence in the letter means that the tenth small thing is normal and expected and not a sign that anything is wrong.

You are living inside a completely ordinary domestic friction, and God has never once treated small thoughtlessness as evidence of a failing household. Colossians 3:13 assumes ongoing small irritation between people who love each other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that assumption feel like relief rather than resignation.

You have not been disrespected in any way heaven would recognize, and there is no ledger where a forgotten message counts against a family. It is written that we are to bear with one another, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room where the sauce is thickening.

Why a small thing got big

Now let me name the mechanism, because I think it will help more than sympathy.

The thing that happened was tiny. The thing you felt was not. And the gap between those two is where all the trouble is, because the size of the feeling makes it seem like there must be a bigger cause underneath, and so the mind goes looking for one.

And the mind always finds something. They do not think about me. I am the service. This is what it will be like when they leave.

You are not being taken for granted, and a mind out looking for evidence has never once been a reliable witness. It is written that we are to bear with one another, which assumes ordinary friction rather than warning about it, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a small thing at its actual size.

None of that is in the evidence. The evidence is two teenagers who ate at a friend's house and did not think about the message. That is the entire event, and everything else has been added by an adult in a quiet kitchen at eight in the evening.

A forgotten text is not a verdict on how much your children love you.

You are not taken for granted, and God has never once let a small carelessness testify about a whole relationship. The passage builds forbearance into ordinary life rather than reserving it for crises, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a small thing at its actual size.

You have been feeding those people for years and they have not noticed, which is what being fed well looks like from the inside. Colossians 3 is written to a household of people learning to live with each other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes ordinary friction survivable without anybody becoming a villain.

Say the plain version, and only that

Here is the practical part, and there is a specific wording to it.

Say something. Silence turns a small thing into an atmosphere, and an atmosphere is much harder for a teenager to interpret than a sentence.

But say the plain version and nothing more. Something like: send me a message if you eat somewhere, because I cook for the number of people I think are coming.

You have a plain sentence available tonight, and God has never once required silence as the price of being gracious. The Spirit of God is saying it the way Colossians 3:13 says it: forbearing and forgiving in one breath, which is a house where hard things get said and survive being said.

That is it. No speech about how much effort goes into it. No comment on being taken for granted. No tone.

The reason is practical, not spiritual. A plain request gets acted on. A speech about effort gets defended against, and then nothing changes and the evening gets worse.

You are allowed to ask for the message, and God has never once required a person to absorb everything in silence to be gracious. Colossians 3:13 puts forbearance and honest dealing side by side rather than making forbearance mean saying nothing, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a plain sentence possible at a kitchen counter.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is being said over somebody putting a pan in the oven tonight.

You are not taken for granted, and two teenagers who forgot a message have never once been a report on the mother who feeds them. I am not being warm for the sake of it. Colossians 3:13 assumes small friction between people who love each other and builds forbearance in from the start, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling that lifts a line like that off a page and sets it down in a kitchen.

And then this, which is the actual word.

You have a can of tuna, a pot of sauce and a pan of noodles, and none of that is wasted whether five eat it tonight or two eat it tomorrow. The written word says forbearing one another and forgiving one another, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary bake into a house where a small thing stays small.

Nobody meant anything by it. That is the truth of the evening, and it is allowed to be the whole truth.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Small thoughtlessness at my own table, you are not evidence about how these children feel about me. Colossians 3:13 says forbearing one another and forgiving one another, so by the Holy Spirit you stay the size you actually are, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Story that says I am only the service here, you have no standing in this kitchen. The written word builds ordinary friction into ordinary love and never treats it as a warning, and by the Spirit of God I refuse to let a forgotten text speak about my family.
  3. Father, You built forbearing into the way people live together. Your word says even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye, so by Your Spirit I put this pan in tonight and I say the plain sentence without a speech on it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
