A Handful of Meal in a Barrel

Tonight we are making a pan of rice with an onion and a can of tomatoes, and whatever lentils or beans are sitting at the back.

I will give you the whole thing in one paragraph, because you are not here for a method. Cut an onion and cook it slowly in a bit of oil until it goes soft and sweet, which takes longer than you think and is the only part that matters. Add rice, a can of tomatoes, and about twice as much water as rice. If you have a can of lentils or beans, drain it and tip it in. Salt it properly. Lid on, low heat, and leave it alone for twenty minutes. That is the meal. It feeds four and it costs almost nothing and it is genuinely good, and it is good because of the onion, not because of anything expensive.

Now, the reason I am writing this is not the rice.

It is that there is a particular feeling that happens in front of an open cupboard three days before payday, and it is not fear exactly. Fear would be simpler. It is shame. You are standing there doing arithmetic on cans, and somewhere underneath the arithmetic a sentence is running that says this is what I have got them down to, and that sentence has almost nothing to do with food.

The most honest inventory in the Bible

There is a woman in 1 Kings who says out loud the thing most people only think.

Elijah has asked her for a bit of bread, and she does not say no and she does not say yes. She tells him exactly what is in the house.

And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. (1 Kings 17:12, King James Version)

A handful of meal. A little oil. Two sticks.

She counts it out. That is what I want you to see. She does not dress it up and she does not apologize for it, and she is not asked to. She gives the real inventory, out loud, to a prophet standing in her doorway, and heaven does not flinch at the number.

You are allowed to say exactly what is in there, and God has never once been embarrassed by an honest cupboard. First Kings 17:12 has a woman count out a handful and two sticks in front of a prophet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the shame out of a person saying what they actually have.

You have not been asked to have more than a handful, and the size of what is in your hands has never once been the qualifying test. It is written that she had a handful of meal and a little oil and that God worked with exactly that, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person from apologizing for an honest amount.

What I am not going to promise you

Now I have to be careful, because of what happens next in that chapter, and I would rather be honest with you than encouraging.

The barrel does not empty. That is the famous part. And I am not going to stand here and tell you that if you cook this rice tonight your cupboard will be full tomorrow, because I do not know that, and people have said that sort of thing to people in your position for a long time and it has done damage.

What I will say is what the text actually does. God does not send her somewhere else. He does not tell her to hold on until better days. He meets her in her own kitchen, with her own handful, in the middle of the meal she was already making.

That is the shape of it. Not a rescue that arrives instead of the cooking. A God who turns up inside the cooking.

You are not waiting for God to arrive somewhere better, and He has never once refused to meet somebody at their own stove. The written word says she went and did according to the saying of Elijah in her own house, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary kitchen a place where He is plainly present.

The onion is the whole sermon

I want to say something about the onion, and it is not a decoration.

The reason that pan tastes like something is that you took ten minutes over an onion. Not because you spent money. There is no expensive thing in that recipe. The good is entirely in attention, and attention is the one ingredient that is free and the first one we drop when we are ashamed.

Because shame makes you hurry. When you feel bad about what you are serving, you want it over with. You bang it together and put it down and do not look at anybody, and the meal that comes out of that is worse than it needed to be, and then the worse meal confirms the shame, and round it goes.

So slow down on the onion. That is a spiritual instruction and I mean it seriously. Ten minutes of care over something cheap is the exact opposite of the sentence running in your head, and 1 Kings 17:12 is a whole chapter of the Holy Spirit taking a handful seriously.

You are not serving them less because it cost less, and care has never once been a thing money buys. First Kings 17:12 has God work with a handful of meal rather than with a full storehouse, and the Holy Spirit is the one who slows a person down enough to do a cheap thing well.

You are cooking with attention tonight, and attention has never once been rationed by anybody. First Kings 17 has a whole household fed out of a barrel nobody would have called adequate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts care into a pan that money could not have bought.
