He Never Once Apologized for the Menu

Tonight it is baked potatoes again, and I know it is baked potatoes again, and that is exactly why I am writing this.

Here is the only thing I want to change. Do not wrap them in foil. Rub the skins with a little oil and salt them, put them straight on the shelf, and give them longer than you think at a good hot heat. That is it. That is the whole difference between the pale steamed thing in foil and a potato with a skin somebody actually wants to eat. It costs nothing. It is the same potato.

Split them, put whatever you have in them, and make sure anything you are reheating to go on top is piping hot the whole way through.

Now. The reason for this.

You have made this four weeks running. Maybe six. And somewhere around week three it stopped being a meal and started being a statement about you, and the statement is not kind, and nobody in your house said it. You said it.

You can see them clock it when it goes on the table. Not complaining. Just clocking it. And something in you goes tight, and you say something slightly too bright about it, and then you eat.

Forty years of the same thing

I want to take you somewhere that I think will genuinely help, and it is not a comforting proverb, it is a menu.

The people of Israel ate manna every morning for forty years.

And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. (Exodus 16:21, King James Version)

Every morning. Every man. Forty years of the same thing, gathered fresh, and then the next morning the same thing again.

And here is what I want you to notice, because it is the whole point. God never once apologized for it. There is no verse where He acknowledges the monotony, or promises variety soon, or frames the sameness as a temporary embarrassment to be got past. It was His provision, it was excellent, it kept a nation alive, and it arrived the same way every single day.

You are giving them something that arrives reliably, and God has never once treated repetition as a poverty. Exodus 16:21 has manna gathered every morning for forty years with no apology attached anywhere in the text, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make sameness read as faithfulness rather than as failure.

What the tightness actually is

I want to say what happens in you when you put the same dish down, because naming it takes most of its power away.

It is not about food. It is a fear about what kind of provider you are. A varied table is one of the ways our culture says we are doing fine. It signals margin: money, time, energy, planning. So when the table stops varying, it feels like the signal has stopped, and you are the one who has to carry the meaning of that in front of the people you love most. Exodus 16:21 has a whole nation fed identically every morning without that ever once being made to mean something about them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who unhooks a meal from a meaning.

And the children, who are the ones you are most worried about, are almost entirely not thinking any of this. They are thinking about a thing that happened at school. Most of them will remember the smell of your kitchen and not one single menu.

You are not sending them a message about your worth, and a table has never once been a report on the person who laid it. The written word says they gathered it every morning and it was called the bread of heaven, and the Spirit of God is the one who lifts a meaning off a meal that never had to carry it.

Change one free thing

Now, the practical piece, and it is deliberately small.

Change one thing that costs nothing. Not to make the meal impressive. To break the loop in your own head, which is the thing that actually needs breaking.

Skins crisped instead of foil. Salt on the outside. Everything on the table in bowls so people build their own instead of being served. Eat in a different room. Put the radio on. Ask one question at the table you have not asked before.

Any one of those changes the evening. None of them changes the shopping. Exodus 16:21 has the same provision arrive daily and stay good, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a circling thought with something small and physical.

And you will notice, if you do it, that what lifts is not the food. It is you. Because you did something on purpose instead of apologizing, and doing one thing on purpose is the exact opposite of the tightness.

You are able to change something tonight without spending anything, and the loop has never once been about the potatoes. Exodus 16:21 has the same food arrive daily and never once become a matter of shame, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a circling thought with something small and physical.

You are not out of ideas, and a repeated dish has never once been a report on the person who keeps making it. The written word records four decades of the same food given daily by God Himself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the embarrassment out of a pot that comes round again.
