The Smaller TableNehemiah 8:10

Sunday Was the Anchor of the Week

This message is for the reader whose Sunday meal used to hold the whole week in place, who now finds it is just another dinner, and who does not know how to keep the day without the crowd that made it

This Sunday we are making a small pan of chicken thighs and potatoes, and it is the easiest good thing in the whole collection.

Here is the whole method in one paragraph. Heat the oven to 425. Cut three or four potatoes into chunks and put them in a roasting pan with a good amount of oil, plenty of salt and any dried herb in the house, and toss them so everything is coated. Lay four chicken thighs on top, skin up, and salt the skin well. Put the pan in for forty five minutes. Do not turn anything and do not open the door for the first thirty. The chicken fat runs down into the potatoes, which is the entire point, and by the end the skin is crisp and the potatoes have gone brown underneath. Check the chicken is cooked all the way through with no pink at the bone. Squeeze lemon over the whole pan and scrape the bottom. It feeds three, it costs a few dollars, and there is one pan to wash.

Now, the reason I am writing is not the chicken.

It is that Sunday stopped working.

There was a time when Sunday held the week in place. It was the day the house filled up, and the cooking started in the morning, and people came in and out of the kitchen and somebody stayed too long and somebody brought something nobody asked for. And the rest of the week could be as scattered as it wanted, because Sunday was a wall at the end of it.

And now there are three of you. And you still cook on Sunday. And it is a nice dinner. And it is just a dinner, and the week has nothing to lean against, and you have not told anyone that you feel the difference.

Sunday Was the Anchor of the Week

The day was holy before the crowd arrived

There is a moment in Nehemiah where a whole nation is weeping and gets told something surprising about a day.

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10, King James Version)

Look at the order of that sentence. This day is holy unto our Lord. It is not holy because of who showed up. It is not holy because the gathering was the right size. The day carries its own holiness, and the eating and the sending of portions follow from that rather than causing it.

And notice what is in the middle: send portions to those who have nothing prepared. The day is not smaller for being shared outward. It gets bigger.

You are keeping a day that is holy in its own right, and God has never once made a crowd the thing that sanctifies a table. Nehemiah 8:10 declares the day holy before anybody eats anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a kitchen on a Sunday morning.

You have not lost the day, and heaven has never once counted a Sunday by attendance. It is written that this day is holy unto our Lord, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room where the oven is heating.

What Sunday was actually doing

Let me name the loss properly, because I do not think anybody has.

Sunday was not a meal. It was a structure. It gave the week a shape, and it did that by being the day where the household was assembled and visible in one room at one time. Everything else could be scattered because that day gathered it.

And when the number changed, the meal survived and the structure did not, and those two are easy to confuse. So you keep cooking, and it keeps not working, and it feels like the cooking has failed when the cooking was never the load bearing part.

A quiet Sunday is not a verdict on a family. It is a structure that needs rebuilding, and structures are built out of small deliberate things rather than out of numbers.

You are not mourning a dinner, and God has never once mistaken a grief for an ingratitude. The passage puts holiness in the day rather than in the gathering, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates what was lost from what is still standing.

You have been carrying the whole shape of a week on your own, and nobody has noticed because you kept cooking. Nehemiah 8 has a people rebuilding an ordinary rhythm after everything was interrupted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes rebuilding possible one small piece at a time.

Keep one thing, and keep it out loud

Here is the practical part, and it is one thing rather than a plan.

Pick one element of the old Sunday and keep it deliberately, out loud, at the smaller table. Not the size of it. One piece.

If somebody always said something before you ate, say it. If the good dish always came out, get it out for three people. If it always started in the morning and the house smelled of it all day, put the oven on at eleven even though it takes forty five minutes.

And say what you are doing while you do it. We still do this. That sentence is doing the structural work, because a tradition kept silently is a habit, and a tradition named out loud is a tradition, and the difference is entirely in the saying.

You are able to keep the day with three people, and God has never once required a quorum to make something holy. Nehemiah 8:10 tells people to eat, to send portions and to refuse sorrow on a day that is already holy, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes one named tradition hold a whole week in place.

The breakthrough

So this is what I believe is being said over somebody in a kitchen on a Sunday morning.

You are not keeping a lesser day, and three people at a table has never once been a report on a family. I am not being warm for the sake of it. Nehemiah 8:10 declares the day holy before anybody sits down and never once counts the room, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling that lifts a line like that off a page and sets it down in a kitchen.

And then this, which is the actual word.

You have four chicken thighs, some potatoes and one pan, and that is a Sunday table with nothing missing from it. The written word says the joy of the Lord is your strength, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary roasting pan into the thing that holds a whole week in place.

Nobody at that table is counting who is not there. That has been happening quietly in one person, and it can stop this Sunday.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Quiet in this house on a Sunday, you are not the measure of the day or of my family. Nehemiah 8:10 says this day is holy unto our Lord, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get to name my week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that the good years are behind us, you have no standing in my kitchen. The written word makes the day holy before anybody arrives and never once counts the room, and by the Spirit of God I refuse to keep a smaller Sunday quietly.
  3. Father, You made the day holy before anybody sat down at it. Your word says the joy of the Lord is my strength, so by Your Spirit I cook this pan today and I say out loud what we still do.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
